We were asked by our client North Tyneside Council to carry out external cleaning at Grade II Listed Spanish City in seaside town Whitley Bay, restoring the facades back to their full glory.

Built in 1910 as a smaller version of the Blackpool Pleasure Beach, the renaissance-style structure with its bacchanalian dancing female figures standards at 180ft in length with the dome towering at 75ft. This pioneering building hosted what was at the time the largest freestanding dome in Britain outside St Paul’s Cathedral, becoming a hub of activity and interest not only because it was home to many attractions, but due to its stunning architecture and unique design. Spanish City today serves as a dining and leisure venue with event space.
Positioned so close to the North Sea means the building is exposed to inclement weather all year round and so requires regular upkeep, ensuring that Spanish City remains a jewel of the Whitley Bay promenade for generations to come.
Due to the building housing shops and eateries, works were conducted during the early hours of the morning to ensure that all businesses were able to remain fully operational throughout the duration of the project. Adding further complexity to the project, designed access had to be erected during these hours so noise levels also needed to be considered to ensure minimal disruption to local residents and wildlife whilst the works were undertaken.
