Case Study

Samuel Baker founded Sotheby’s in London in 1744, with their main location of 34-35 New Bond Street situated in the heart of London’s Mayfair district. We had two primary considerations; the first was the safety of the public, both those who entered the building and those who walked by on the main street.

Scope of Works

  • External redecoration
  • Pre-paint repairs
  • Conservation works
  • Full repairs and redecoration to windows and Stucco masonry

Duration

8 Weeks

The front façade was fully scaffolded to allow access to the windows and Stucco masonry which required full repairs and redecoration. The second was the historic listing of the building; we worked closely with the Conservation & Heritage Officer to ensure all aspects of the restoration met with their approval. The specification was put together by Dulux Heritage, agreed by the Conservation & Heritage Officer.

We selected 4 x highly trained painting operatives, 1 x multi-trader to complete the repairs and a dedicated working lead Site Supervisor who had completed heritage maintenance training on ‘Understanding Repair & Maintenance of Traditional Buildings’ in partnership with National Heritage Training (L3 NVQ), plus BS7913 Conservation of Historic Buildings.

Our Supervisor worked with the Conservation & Heritage Officer closely from day one, allowing the decision-making process within each phase to progress quickly and to ensure compliance with the heritage legislation, allowing us to strictly adhere to programme. This close working was all the more important when factoring in the weather conditions and the vulnerability of some of the exposed areas of the building. A key point was the paint flake tests to match historic colours and lead content (CLAW), which we factored into the site-specific risk assessments and method statements and safe systems of working.

Our Supervisor developed a good working relationship with Sotheby’s by holding daily meetings to discuss the day’s activities and plan accordingly. We also held weekly site meetings with the Conservation & Heritage Officer to discuss compliance with the specification and any areas of concern as well as access, quality, safety and performance.
